BackCare, the charity for Healthier Backs has recently published the latest edition of the Guide to Handling of People, 6th edition, which is targeted at nurses and care workers with a forward prepared by Dave O’Neill, IEHF Chief Executive.

Back pain in the NHS is costing the tax payer over £400m a year. Evidence has shown that cuts in training, increased number of patients and the onset of obesity amongst patients on wards and in care homes around the UK is causing thousands of nurses and care workers to seek treatment for back pain.

According the the British Chiropractic Association, about 5000 nurses are currently being treated for back pain each year, following a surge in patients' weights and the number of patients nurses and careworkers are expected to care for.

Each year, over 80,000 nurses and up to 4000 care workers are forced to take early retirement due to back pain. Across the care sector, handling of patients injuries account for over a quarter of all reported damages to UK employees.

In a continued bid to prevent such issues amongst nurses and careworkers, BackCare have published a revised version of the Guide to Handling of People. This textbook is an essential reference manual for anyone responsible for the training and safety of nurses and care workers.
