Postgraduate Certificate In Applied Ergonomics

The course is specially designed to be undertaken by employees in any organisation who need to apply ergonomics principles to their work. It will provide an understanding of the key issues related to workplace ergonomics and work design and will also direct students towards additional resources to facilitate the learning process. Students will be required to use this understanding both to complete the course and to apply the knowledge gained in real situations in the workplace. The distance learning format means that most of the material and recommended background reading can be undertaken by the student in their own time, but with defined access and support from university staff.
On successful completion of the course students should have:
- an understanding of the importance of ergonomics in the workplace
- a basic knowledge of ergonomics theory
- the ability to use a number of valuable ergonomics assessment techniques
- experience of conducting an ergonomics case study.

Course content
There are two 30 credit modules, Ergonomics Application in the Workplace and Practical Ergonomics Investigation. The first module, Ergonomics Application in the Workplace covers the following topics:
• The body at work
• Anthropometry
• Workplace design
• Work seating
• Work related upper limb disorders
• Manual handling
• Display Screen Equipment
• Environmental factors
• Work Organisation
The second module, Practical Ergonomics Investigation, provides an opportunity to carry out an in-depth workplace ergonomics investigation.
Assessment
Coursework, exam and project report.

Acceptance onto the course will depend on you holding a first degree or its equivalent from a recognised institution. If you have an alternative non-degree or professional qualification, for instance within engineering, design or health sciences , you may also be considered for entry. Your capabilities and support from your employer will also be taken into account in determining acceptance.
